Divers always want to go deep. It’s a common thought among divers that the deeper you go, the more your going to see. In some dive spots this may be true as some species only dwell in the deep dark blue. But what about the shallows, that wonderfully lit, peaceful bit of water usually only visited for three minutes during the safety stop, surely there can’t be that much to see? False.
The shallow waters of Komodo and the surrounding islands are riddled with some of the most beautiful shallow reefscapes that contain just as much marine life as the deep. I’ve made a habit of devoting a large portion of my dives to visiting the shallows because you never know what your going to find. In this past week I came face to face with the most beautiful baby reef manta who was using the shallow calm waters as a self designated nursery. Sea turtles are common as well in the shallows as their food source is only three to five meters below them as apposed to fifteen to twenty meters which means more time for munchin!
And there is nothing more tranquil than spending the last part of a dive gliding over an immaculate reef that is completely illuminated by the sun so you can absorb all the magnificent colors of the underwater world! There’s a time and place for everything. The deep is hauntingly beautiful of course, but make sure to save some air for an extended safety stop next time you’re in Komodo.
